About the Maker
Dorje Vladimir Radovic, from Zagreb, started making films after 3 years at the film academy in Amsterdam, because he was open to change. He longed for direct creation, something he could put his heart and soul into. During a major film project he accidentally came across “The Potters Book” by Bernard Leach. The unlimited creative potential of pottery was the deciding factor for him. Dorje learned everything about pottery through self-study and experience. Partly due to his way of working and his expertise, this led to an invitation in 2008 to teach in Bhutan and to set up the very first pottery workshop there. Nowadays he works from his own studio in Middelie, North Holland.
The Production Process & Sustainability
Dorje makes all products by hand in his own workshop. Creating a pot starts with preparing the clay. The clay is kneaded – cut – opened – and kneaded again by Dorje by hand until it has the correct structure. The product is then shaped on the rotary table and then dried, baked, glazed and finally fired two to three times at 1060 degrees.
What is extra special about Dorje’s work is that he uses effective micro-organisms, simply called EM, a discovery by the Japanese agricultural professor Teruo Higa. EM is a mixture of common naturally occurring positive microorganisms. The secret is in the combination. This makes EM effective and widely applicable. Dorje uses EM by fermenting it in his clay and adding it to the glaze.
