Glas Studio Nouck

Nanouck van Iersel designs, makes, restores and repairs stained glass under the name Glas Studio Nouck. In her webshop you will find a beautiful collection of stained glass artworks, large and small.

About the maker
Nanouck has always been fascinated by nature and light. “It amazes me how organic it seems at first glance, until you pause and zoom in. Then you see that more and more graphic lines emerge. My work is about slowing down. The slowing down you experience by paying attention to material and light. The objects invite you to look in peace and enjoy the interplay of lines and colours.”

With her work, Nanouck wants to show that light is ever-changing, that it surprises you again and again. “How wonderful is it, in a world where coincidence barely exists anymore, to be surprised by a play of light because the sun is shining just a little brighter? I make you look with different eyes, to marvel at what nature has to offer us.”

Production process
Nanouck develops a design and puts it on paper by hand. She then lets herself be inspired by the glass, which she buys in ‘surprise boxes’. “When I have found the right glass, I work it with hand tools using a technique that has existed for hundreds of years. This is how I let the craft flourish.” With the hand tools, Nanouck has control over every curve. “This slows down the process; the work sometimes seems to grow under my hands. That is how my idea gradually takes shape into an art object.”

Sustainability
She chooses her materials very deliberately — Nanouck works exclusively with rescued glass. “This is good quality glass that a manufacturer has rejected for its colour or pattern. I am actually delighted by these small, beautiful imperfections. With this approach I do not take the easy route, but wait until I find glass that fits my vision and my idea.”
