About the Makers
Erik and Monique met at the Design Academy in Eindhoven. Afterward, Erik started his own studio, while Monique continued her studies in Amsterdam. After completing the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, she founded STUDIO MHL. She had been making jewelry since a young age, and it was her dream to eventually have her own studio. When their first son was born in 2015, Erik and Monique decided to work together. They now work from their studio in Rosmalen.
They complement each other well. Erik loves the craftsmanship and makes the jewelry with great precision by hand. Monique designs the new collection with great pleasure. Additionally, they work with a freelancer for production.
Production Process
Studio MHL works with a fixed collection, complemented by new designs presented twice a year. “First, the jewelry is designed, either from material or handcrafted from wax. Some models are cast in Schoonhoven. We finish the castings ourselves and process them further. It is important to us that all jewelry is made, polished, finished, and checked by us. We do this to ensure the high quality.”
Sustainability
The STUDIO MHL collection is available on their own website and is also sold through a beautiful selection of retailers, many of which have been loyal customers for years. They mainly work on order. All jewelry is made from recycled silver from European companies. They collaborate with a Dutch caster and a Belgian gold-plater – the gold-plater works with certified recycled gold. “Our jewelry is made with great care so it can be worn and cherished for years. Silver and gold-plated silver that we no longer use is sent for recycling at a certified company in Amsterdam.”
