Amsterdam Made, the quality mark and platform for sustainable and local makers, is turning ten. What started as a quality mark for products from the city of Amsterdam has grown into a national platform that puts sustainable craftsmanship in the spotlight. Amsterdam Made is now reaching a new milestone with the launch of the Locally Made Awards: an annual national award show for the best sustainable products made in the Netherlands.
In 2015, Amsterdam’s manufacturing industry gained a new stage: Amsterdam Made, the quality mark that made local, sustainable products recognisable. The first five makers to carry the ‘Amsterdam Made’ name — Brandt & Levie, Kesbeke Tafelzuur, Brouwerij ‘t IJ, Roetz Bikes and Frederik Roijé — immediately set the tone: artisanal, sustainable and of the highest quality. The launch took place with then alderman Kajsa Ollongren, who championed the local manufacturing industry.
“Amsterdam Made has truly become the calling card of the city,” says Oos Kesbeke, director of Kesbeke Tafelzuur and the very first to receive the quality mark. “It has put local makers on the map and brought a sense of pride.” Tiemen ter Hoeven, founder of Roetz Bikes, adds: “The platform offers a wonderful showcase of what Amsterdam’s makers have to offer and actively contributes to bringing the spirit of craftsmanship back to our city.”
Ten years on, Amsterdam Made gives more than 200 certified brands and countless products greater visibility. From circular clothing and handmade jewellery to design objects made from recycled materials and natural personal care products: all made with care, with an eye for people and the planet. Through the online platform, consumers discover the stories behind brands and products and can buy directly from the makers.
Amsterdam Made gained a national counterpart in 2024 with the expansion into Locally Made, the quality mark for sustainable products from across the Netherlands. Marit Timmerman, founder of Amsterdam Made and Locally Made: “For ten years we have been making the power of local craftsmanship visible. First regionally, then nationally. Now we are continuing that development with the Locally Made Awards — an annual stage where the best products made in the Netherlands get the recognition they deserve. It is time for the Netherlands to truly establish itself as a leading nation for sustainable, high-quality manufacturing.”
The Locally Made Awards will become an annual event that brings together makers, brands and the public: a stage for pride, quality and innovation!
