Boeren van Amstel produces local dairy that promotes biodiversity in the Amstelland area. For every liter of Whole Milk, Semi-Skimmed Milk, Cream Yogurt, and Farmers’ Yogurt sold, they contribute 2 cents to the Vogelbescherming in collaboration with Weidevogelfonds. Additionally, for every kilo of Amsterdammer Cheese sold, they plant one square meter of biodiversity-rich vegetation along the water’s edges. Their goal is to cultivate an additional 100,000 square meters of biodiversity in Amsterdam’s backyard within two years.

About the Makers
Boeren van Amstel has long been dedicated to creating safe breeding grounds in the Amstelland area for meadow birds, such as the Black-tailed Godwit, Lapwing, and Redshank. Biodiversity is essential for this, and to protect it, the farmers bring their own natural dairy products to market. Each week, about 20,000 packs of natural dairy and a large supply of Amsterdammer Cheese are distributed across the city. The 18 farmers, passionate about their craft, dedicated to nature, and committed to preserving greenery near the city, work closely with a commercial team that manages sales, marketing, and distribution.

The Production Process
Twice a week, Boeren van Amstel receives orders from customers such as Albert Heijn and hospitality wholesalers. The team then determines which affiliated farmers can supply the best milk. This milk is processed at the factory into whole/semi-skimmed milk, yogurt, and Amsterdammer Cheese, and is then distributed to customers.

Sustainability
The farmers carry out additional nature-supporting activities for meadow birds. In partnership with Bird Protection Netherlands, they work on practices like extensification (fewer cows), delayed mowing, creating temporary ponds, nature-friendly banks, and enhanced biodiversity. Each farmer’s performance in these areas is monitored, and higher scores earn greater contributions from the Meadow Bird Fund. Additionally, the farmers plant herbs and grass-rich crops along waterways, aiming to foster an extra 100,000 square meters of biodiversity in the Amstelland.

The sustainable and delicious products from Boeren van Amstel are available in various catering establishments and supermarkets. More info can be found here.
