In 1689, Willem van Oranje traveled from the Netherlands to London, taking a Dutch drink – gin – with him. Safe to say now, it was a huge success! In 2016, two friends from Amsterdam made the same trip, inspired to create the same gin, made according to the original recipe from 1689; another hit. The two friends discovered one of the very first gin recipes in the archives of the British Library and have brought it back to life as Gin 1689. The Dutch Dry and Queen Mary Pink Gin Edition are a taste of the real authentic gin. And they are well worth the 300 year wait.

1689 Dutch Dry Gin

Gin 1689 Dutch Dry Gin is, as its name suggests, a real Dutch gin. This is gin with a story inspired by a craft of three centuries ago. When Willem van Oranje became king of England, Ireland and Scotland, he took gin – or its predecessor that we know as jenever – overseas with him. This traditional Dutch drink became extremely popular and introduced the local population to Dutch craftsmanship. A special discovery in a British library brought the recipe of this historic drink to light. As a result, the makers of Gin 1689 decided to breathe new life into this story, resulting in this gin. This happened in collaboration with the Herman Jansen company from Schiedam. This gin is made from juniper berries, quinces, apples, lemon and nutmeg.

1689 Queen Mary Pink Gin

The latest sensation in the gin field is Gin 1689 Pink Gin. This is also called the “Queen Mary” edition, after the wife of Willem van Orange the Third who made gin great in England in 1689. This premium pink gin is the very first pink gin from the Netherlands. The “original” Gin 1689 is used as the basis for the pink. This is distilled with raspberry and strawberry.
