OYOY Amsterdam makes handmade, unique oysters that can be used as decoration or to put something in.

About the makers
Founders Florentien and Veerle have been friends for years and are both creative. Inspired by a similar product they found somewhere, they saw the potential success of these oysters and decided to get started themselves. “After asking some tips from various makers, we got started. Our first batch was a great success and from there we have become increasingly professional.”

Production process & sustainability
The oysters used for OYOY Amsterdam come from the Chinese restaurant Nam Kee on the Zeedijk in Amsterdam. Instead of being thrown away – after consuming the actual oyster of course – they are transformed into a beautiful work of art.

Florentien and Veerle pick up the oysters from the restaurant and clean them. The oysters are then sent to prisons in Scheveningen and Heerhugowaard. “There, detainees take over from us. With great care they transform the oysters into small works of art. They then send the oysters back to us and we apply a layer of clear varnish to protect the oysters against moisture and dirt.”

In addition to saving the oysters from the trash, the development of this product offers inmates an opportunity to work and prepare for their return to society. “We are very happy with this collaboration and hope to continue it for a long time.”
