About the makers
The Spanish-Dutch Nina and Sofía Andrea are the faces, but above all the makers, behind SA Design. SA stands for Sofía Andrea, the initials of daughter Sofía. Nina’s Spanish grandmother was a seamstress in Madrid. She learned the sewing trade from her. “Simply by doing a lot together, under a strict watchful eye.” Daughter Sofía was born in 2001 and soon turned out to have a great passion for drawing, painting and making jewelry. SA Design was founded in 2018; the perfect way to combine Spain and the Netherlands and be creative together as mother and daughter.
The productionproces
Nina and Sofía take care of all the steps in the process themselves. From designing to making, from choosing materials to processing them, from shipping to aftercare. No large quantities, but unique items. They design the bags together. Sofía makes the jewelry and does the socials and content. Nina makes everything that has to do with leather. “In this way we complement each other perfectly.”
Sustainability
SA Design works with leather from traceable origins and naturally tanned leather. Where possible, ecologically certified materials are used, such as the flannel of the dust bags that they make themselves. “We use everything from a skin and have almost no waste: from the leather that we cannot use for a bag, we make packaging material, labels and small leather goods.” What they do not or cannot make themselves, such as the wicker bags and leather, they personally purchase from other family businesses in the Netherlands or Spain.
