About the maker
Saskia graduated as a neuropsychologist, but shortly afterwards felt the urge to make and create. She changed course and quit her job to become a leather worker. “I really enjoy designing and making bags because it is a nice mix of making something beautiful and functional. Leather is very versatile and so far I can still use it to learn new techniques and skills, so I can always take a step further in the profession.” In 2015, Saskia founded her bag label Sas de Vries. She now has a studio and shop in her tiny house in Haarlem.
The production process
Most of the products Saskia makes are commissioned by the customer. A sketch is first made based on the wishes. The bag or accessory is then made by hand by Saskia in her own leather workshop. “Some of it is stitched with a sewing machine, but an increasing part of the production is completely hand-stitched.” So traditionally produced!
Sustainability
For her own collection, Saskia only uses vegetable tanned leather with the Consorzio Vera Pella Italiana quality mark. This means that the leather has been tanned with respect for people and the environment. “Because only natural substances are used, no harmful substances are released into the environment and the leather is also biodegradable.” Saskia also uses leather from leftovers for her NO WASTE collection. She also offers the option to have an item made from vegetable tanned leather from organic cows.
