The Plastic Free Co. sells sustainable, environmentally friendly products. The line of in-house products includes handmade beeswax candles, beeswax food wraps as a sustainable alternative to plastic cling film and reusable cotton paper towels as a sustainable alternative to disposable paper towels.
About the maker
Founder Ariana Ahmadzada studied Science, Business and Innovation in the field of sustainability. She was also working on this in her personal life by eating vegetarian, buying second-hand clothing and reducing plastic. However, she could not find a good local webshop with products that she was specifically interested in. This led to her setting up The Plastic Free Co. during her master’s studies. “I wanted to offer products made by small local makers to support the local economy and go against the grain of big companies and mass production.” After four years of offering beautiful products from other makers, she also started her own line. These products are shown on the Amsterdam Made & Locally Made website.
The productionproces
The ingredients and materials for the Plastic Free Co. line are sourced locally as much as possible. They are always durable and of high quality and are almost always received without plastic packaging. The products are then made in small quantities and by hand in the workspace in Amsterdam.
Sustainability
The concept of The Plastic Free Co. is that a sustainable alternative is offered for all kinds of daily products that do not contain disposable plastic. “But sustainability is not just about reducing your plastic. At every step of the production process we look at what is possible in terms of sustainability. For the ingredients and materials, for example, we look at where it grows and whether it is organic. We also look critically at the purpose of a product. Can you reuse it? What happens to the product once it reaches its end? This way, the beeswax cloths can still be used as fire starters when you can no longer use them.”
