Late last year, Amsterdam Made celebrated its tenth anniversary at Hal West in De Hallen — a new cultural venue in the heart of the Kinkerbuurt in Amsterdam. Partly thanks to our positive experience there, we are happy to tell you more about this place. Time to sit down for a coffee with Annemé Rosa Bian, Coordinator of Cultural Events.
Hal West is an initiative by architect André van Stigt and director and co-owner Theo Huisman. Hal West is the cultural expression of De Hallen Studio’s — a place that explicitly opens its doors to the neighbourhood and the public, with programming, encounter and community building at its core.
Hal West grew out of De Hallen Studio’s. What prompted this expansion?
“Hal West emerged from a desire to create an accessible place where art, society and ideas can take shape. De Hallen Studio’s developed a space that connects local residents, makers and social initiatives. Activities focus on encounter, inspiration and community building, with extra attention for young makers, neighbourhood residents and underrepresented voices. Hal West offers space for a diverse programme of spoken word, music, theatre, debate and community gatherings.”
That sounds like a wonderful place to work! What exactly is your role?
“My role as Coordinator of Cultural Events is that of initiator and programmer: I ensure that cultural events are strong in content and run smoothly in practice. Driven by my passion for culture, I create spaces where people feel welcome and can be themselves. As a historian with a deep love for art, culture and inclusion, I work every day on programmes that connect, enrich and inspire. I do this in collaboration with our community builder Hester Tiggeloven.”

What are the plans for the future?
“Our ambition is to grow into the cultural living room of the Kinkerbuurt, with a weekly programme that speaks to local residents, offers recognition and invites encounter. We want to offer cultural activities in an accessible way where everyone feels welcome and can enjoy themselves.
We are currently actively working on raising our profile and reaching a broader audience. With an inspiring programme that appeals to a diverse group, we are working to help more and more people discover us and establish us as a permanent cultural destination. We do this through a clear social media strategy and by positioning ourselves clearly as an open and accessible place for everyone.”
Including for our makers! Why is Hal West interesting for them?
“We have a wonderful venue where all kinds of brand activations, launches and substantive conversations can take place. Last year we celebrated the 10th anniversary of Amsterdam Made together with a large group of makers, with a festive drinks reception and a programme of content. We also hosted the book launch of Stijn de Vries’ Hustle: an inspiring evening full of workshops, in-depth conversations and an informative programme.
A personal meeting with customers or partners is of great value to your brand. At a time when so much contact takes place online, it is precisely the physical coming together that creates genuine connection and lasting engagement.”
What if someone wants to organise something but could use a little help?
“We are always open to a wide range of requests and creative ideas, and of course we are happy to think along with you to realise the best possible event together!”
